Super HeroiHOT #9: Sally Acorn

18 Aug

Here I was watching America’s Next Top Model when I thought, “Dammit, I really should do a new Super HeroiHOT.”  Part of the reason I’ve been slacking has been because well 1) I’m moving 2) I’ve been looking for female characters from different publishers other than the big two 3) I wanted a character who was a different ethnicity or… in this case, species.

If you know about Sonic the Hedgehog then you may not even recognize Sally Acorn (unless you remember the very old animated show from the 90s), but she’s a very important character in the Sonic Universe.

Princess Sally

Well, Sally’s a Squip… or Chipuirrel…  Anyway, she’s a cross between a chipmunk and a squirrel… which is neat, I guess.

Throughout the majority of her career in comics she’s been distinguished by her shortish haircut that sort of looks like a mohawk thing depending on the angle and her blue jacket and boots.  In this photo above, she also has a strap with her computer named “NICOLE” attached to it.  Even as a child, I was a little weirded out about the character being okay with only covering up her feet and shoulders… I mean, if I was an anamorphic Chipuirrel, I’d probably want to cover up my naughty bits.  Especially since her little bit of signs that she’s a girl are actually just the curve of her body… it’s a little weird.  But, I have to give Archie a break because Sonic is a kids title.

Creepily, many people have exploited her accessible animal naughty parts in hentai… so, be careful when you search her on google images, kids.

However, during some of my favorite storylines from a couple years ago when Sonic goes and comes back from space a year later (which I honestly believe was around the same time of DC’s One Year Later move), the title was totally made more mature both visually in more of a anime like style and thematically.  At this time, Sally’s hair grows out, and the awkwardness of her animal cleavage becomes a strange highlight of the time.  It’s as if they treat her underbelly lighter color as a shirt or something…

Princess Sally

Those Squirrel hips are gigantic for an alleged 16-17 year old animal-human thing.

Overall, the look works despite the awkwardness; it’s both classic and unique.

Appearance: 8/10

Sally’s sort of a conjoining of all of the emotions of a teenage girl.  Hell, isn’t Archie experts at representing this by now?  It’s obvious that she wants Sonic and he wants her back, but her “duty” to her kingdom comes first.  Sure, that’s honorable, but still…  She can be pretty jealous and jump to conclusions in her relationships.  On the other hand, she can be incredibly sweet and caring.  I guess it sort of just revolves around how she’s feeling on a week to week basis.

In the picture above, she’s crying not only because she’s mistakenly thought that Sonic was with someone else because she hasn’t told him her feelings since she’s been so busy with the kingodm, but she’s also crying because she’s incredibly jealous.  It’s like a whole big soap opera… they’re destined to be together, but Sonic’s totally acting like one of my cousins and being a player… minus the unprotected sex with “fuckbuddy” friends…

Sally also plays the Damsel in Distress gig way too often…

Princess Sally

Yeah, that’s a little excessive.  Recently, she’s become more authoritative and a self made girl… So, she gets points for that.  However, teenage years were not the best for most of us… so, who wants to relive that?

Personality: 4/10

Princess Sally

Alright, alright… Sally’s more of an intelligent leader than anything.  But, she has gotten down and dirty in the field… usually she employs some type of martial art skill to kick the baddies butts.  Nothing spectacular, but it works.

Plus, she survived fighting an evil, black leather version of herself!

Superpowers: 6/10

Princess Sally

Sally being the princess of the most of Mobius isn’t that big of a secret, but her home life is spent being in charge (until her Dad comes back and then gives up power to her brother, Prince Elias).  She’s good at what she does… I mean, she’s lead the Freedom Fighters since she was like 14… Sure, balancing it all gets to her because she’s missing out on her teenage years, but it’s very important and she does a great job at it.

Secret Identity: 8/10

Princess Sally

Okay, I own this comic.  Granted, one of my older cats, Patch, decided to use it as a scratching post, but it’s hillarious.  The Sonic Universe is apparently a multiverse (Archie actually does a surprisingly good job parodying the multiverses of the Big Two) with one of those being a Sailor Moon knock off.  It’s awesome, great, and quite grand.

Sally has a great amount of respect for Knuckles and even had a little kid crush on him… that’s just too cute to ignore.

She cannot commit to a full time relationship with Sonic which is stupid.  I mean, they both love each other… come on!  It’s not even forbidden love… it’s more like “I’m too busy running a kingdom for you” type of love.

Sally, you look great but you’re just too busy running that darn kingdom and not relaxing and having fun like you’re supposed to be when you’re a teen.  Lighten up, finally commit to Sonic, and kick some more ass… then, I’ll love you.
